Solving Pulling, Reactivity and Vet Anxiety in a Young German Shepherd

German Shepherds are intelligent, loyal and powerful dogs. When properly trained, they are exceptional companions. However, without clear guidance and structure, their strength and energy can quickly become overwhelming.

When Chester was just 18 months old, his owners were reaching breaking point.

The Challenge: Pulling, Reactivity and Loss of Confidence

Walking Chester had become a daily struggle.

His owners faced constant pulling on the lead, lunging towards other dogs and an unreliable recall. His strength made him difficult to handle and there were genuine safety concerns about being pulled into roads or towards other people and dogs.

The situation became even more challenging when Chester developed anxiety around veterinary visits. In pain and fearful, he became resistant to being handled by veterinary staff, making essential treatment difficult.

Like many adolescent German Shepherds, Chester wasn't a bad dog. He was simply a powerful young dog who lacked boundaries, confidence and guidance.

Creating Structure and Clear Boundaries

The first step was observing Chester's daily behaviour.

One of the most obvious issues was how he greeted visitors. Excitement levels would immediately escalate, creating chaos and reinforcing unwanted behaviours.

Through calm, structured training and consistent boundaries, Chester quickly learned that he didn't need to control every situation.

Instead of constantly reacting to his environment, he began looking to his owners for direction.

Using Motivation to Drive Success

A personalised reward-based training programme was introduced, using suitable, nutritious treats to reinforce desired behaviours.

The focus wasn't simply on obedience commands. Training centred on helping Chester understand expectations while creating positive associations with calm behaviour.

Within just two weeks, significant changes were visible.

A Different Dog in Just Nine Weeks

The transformation over the following weeks was remarkable.

Chester learned to:

  • Walk calmly on a loose lead

  • Ignore distractions and other dogs

  • Wait politely before greeting visitors

  • Stop jumping up at people

  • Leave household items alone

  • Stop chewing inappropriate objects

  • Remain within boundaries around the home

  • Stop digging and attempting to escape

Most importantly, his owners regained confidence.

Walking was no longer stressful or frightening. Daily life became enjoyable again.

Overcoming Fear at the Vet

Behavioural training wasn't limited to the home.

A long-term programme was developed to help Chester feel more comfortable around veterinary handling and examinations.

By gradually building positive experiences and reducing fear, progress was made towards making vet visits safer and less stressful for everyone involved.

Why Mental Stimulation Matters

Alongside obedience training, Chester began attending agility classes.

Activities like agility provide German Shepherds with both physical exercise and mental enrichment, helping to satisfy their natural need for work and problem-solving.

The result was a calmer, more fulfilled dog.

German Shepherd Training Lessons

German Shepherds thrive when they understand their role within the family.

Without guidance, they often create their own rules. With clear boundaries, positive reinforcement and consistency, they become confident, reliable companions.

Chester's story demonstrates how quickly behaviour can improve when training addresses the root causes rather than simply correcting symptoms.
